Welcome to Tunis. Upon arrival, a visit to the 9th-century World Heritage site of Carthage. Monuments such as the vast Antonine baths, Roman amphitheatre and the Punic ports evoke a bygone era. But some of the best relics can be found in the archaeological museum of Carthage. Thereafter, enjoy a hearty dinner before we retire for the day.

Today we visit the one the best-preserved Roman cities in Africa; Dougga. The archaeological site of Dougga is built on an elevated and isolated site overlooking fertile plains, Dougga was the capital of both the Phoenician and Roman states and boasts many imposing monuments, including the theatre, built around AD 168, the impressive Capitoline Temple, and the 18-metre Nubian Mausoleum of Ateban monument. While the city’s monuments are truly amazing you’ll be struck by how quiet and tourist-free this enchanting place it, with the wind rustling though the olive trees and dry grass often the only sounds you’ll hear. Thereafter, transfer to Kairouan.

The city of Kairouan is the 4th holiest city in the Islamic World. Visit the Great Mosque of Okba, the oldest in North Africa. See the two main reservoirs of Aghlabite Basin. Lastly, visit the exotic Medina (Old town) of Kairouan where there are many interesting shops selling all kinds of souviniers. After which we depart for Sbeitla. After lunch, visit the Sufetula ruins, the first Byzantine Roman city conquered by the Arabs.

After breakfast, enjoy a 4-wheel-drive from Tozeur. After which, travel along the Sahara desert plains to the 3 scenic Mountain Oasis of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides which is near the Algerian border. You will see waterfalls, canyons and streams. Enjoy the cool comfort under the palms trees. We will continue our journey to Nefta. Nefta is the site chosen by Hollywood moviemakers for films such as “Star Wars” & “The English Patient”. Here, the panoramic views of the great sand dunes, vast desert and breathtaking sunset will leave you in awe.

Continue to Douz. You’ll travel across Chott El Jerid, the largest salt lake in the Sahara Desert. Take in the green and pink hues of the lake as it streams by. Thereafter,continuing to Douz. Douz is a gateway village to the Sahara and rewards a little digging and exploration. Afternoon it’s time to meet your camel drivers, learn the etiquette of desert life, and begin the trek into the Sahara. Lastly, transfer to Matmata for our overnight stay.

Matmata, which is named after the tribe who live in the region. This place is best known for the houses built underground to protect the Berbers from the intense summer heat. These troglodyte villages are exciting places to explore. One of these, together with the surrounding ‘lunar’ landscape, was the set for the aforementioned Tatooine location. Scenes from Steven Spielberg’s ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ were also filmed here. Next, on the way to Sousse, stop by El Jem’s spectacular Roman amphitheatre. This Colosseum-like structure, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, is the third largest of its kind in the world – dating from AD 238 – but is remarkably well preserved and quickly transforms you back to the Roman days of gladiators and chariot races. Lastly, make your way along the Mediterranean coast to Sousse.

Sousse, Tunisia‘s third largest town. It’s an unusual combination of beach resort, industrial port and ancient Islamic city. Set off the day to visit the Medina – Sousse‘s crenellated 9th century walls, they remain intact today and stood right on the shore. Proceed to visit the oldest monument in the city – the Ribat which was built on old byzantine foundations and was a fortress of the Almoravid era. Within the premises of this impressive monument, is a large prayer hall, where the smaller rooms are the cells of the fighting monks who were garrisoned there.

Move on to the principal town of Cap Bon, Nabeul is famous for its pottery. Enjoy some free time for shopping. Continue you will visit the coastal towns of Hammamet, which are known for its sandy white beaches, crystal clear blue sea water, and beautiful gardens. Strolling at the Medina which dates back to around 1500. Lastly, continue back to Tunis for our visit of Tunis. Visit Sidi Bou Said, the most picturesque Andalous village in Tunisia. Enjoy the contrast between the white walls and the blue windows of the village houses in Tunisia and many more.
